Ignite the Ice Champions, TIU16 Girls Win It All
U16 Girls Hockey News
The Team Illinois Girls U16 kicked off their 2007-08 campaign by bringing home the Championship from the Ignite The Ice Tournament held in the Cleveland, Ohio area. The start of the season has been promising with wins in all five of the tournament games to go along with three earlier exhibition victories for an overall mark of 8-0-0.
The tournament started with a razor thin 1-0 triumph over Buffalo with the Bison goalie turning away 37 shots. Next up was a Montgomery Blue Devil squad that fell by a 10-0 margin. The final non-medal game was a much tougher match against the girls from Shattuck St. Mary’s with TI emerging with a 3-1 win. The goal was the first given up by the team and didn’t come until the third period of the year’s sixth game. Kudu’s to the goaltending tandem of Natalie Richards and Kellie Shutter along with a tough Defense.
The semi-final match was against previously undefeated Walser of Minnesota. TI’s skaters came out with a vengeance, notching three goals in the first five minutes on the way to a 9-0 romp. That win led to a championship game rematch with the Shattuck squad. Coach Andy Chomor’s girls found themselves well tested, twice taking the lead only to have Shattuck even the score. Regulation ended with 2-2 up on the scoreboard, but TI’s Cailie Heidersbach found the back of the net during the third minute of overtime for a 3-2 win and the big tournament trophy.
The theme of this year’s squad is team success not individual accomplishments. So let’s just note the team statistics through eight games – 40 goals for and 3 goals against. Credit goes to Andy Chomor’s coaching efforts, goaltending (Richards and Shutter, defense (Maggie Brennolt, Jennifer Caldwell, Ann Doherty, Brianne Mahoney, Whitney Routman, and Alanna Szypura), and the forwards (Heidersbach, Brittany Beardsley, Erin Bradarich, Jennessa Jackson, Nina Laurie, Barrett McBride, Claire Santostefanos, Ali Svoboda, and Amber Taitel). The season is a long journey, but let’s congratulate the team for its early success!

U14 GIRLS CAPTURE CONSOLATION CHAMPIONSHIP IN OSWEGO
U16 Girls Hockey News
A storm is coming. It has at its epicenter 17 girls who skate with unbridled fury and who wield their sticks with cosmic force. This storm is the Team Illinois U14 Girls team.
The girls served notice they are a force to be reckoned with by winning the Consolation Championship at the tournament in Oswego, New York, in stunning fashion.
The first game pitted the TI Girls against the New Jersey Colonials. The girls prevailed 4-3 in a hard fought contest that set the tone for the rest of the weekend. In the second game, the TI girls faced the Rideau Thunder. Hailing from Ottawa, the Thunder was an exceptional team. The TI girls gave as good as they got, but ultimately fell to the Canadians, 4-2. The third game was a heartbreaker. The girls played the Rochester Edge in a match that was without question the most physical of the Tournament. The girls lost 4-3, giving up the deciding goal with just 8 seconds to play.
The outcome of the first three games resulted in the girls playing in the semi-finals of the consolation round . The opponent was the Syracuse Stars. The girls clamped down on defense and won convincingly, 4-1. It was apparent the girls were determined not to come away empty from their journey to the shores of Lake Ontario.
In the Finals, the girls got the game they wanted, a rematch with the Rochester Edge. The TI girls were not to be denied. They fought with heart and tenacity and as the final seconds of the third period elapsed, the girls began to celebrate a resounding 2-0 shutout.
The Oswego Tournament was a huge success. Not only did the girls garner a hard fought championship, they exhibited the ability to shore up their defense when it counted, to go along with an offense that has major firepower. They outscored their opponents 6-1 in the Semi-Finals and the Finals. (Congrats to Stephanie Lemke and Kelsey Ingram for their outstanding netminding during these two games). Overall, the girls achieved a scoring advantage of 14-12.
The U-14 Girls consist of nine forwards {Halley Baker, Kimberly Davis, Katelyn Hodgman, Cacey Maciejewski, Taylor Mahoney, Mackenzie Martin, Hannah Merens, Giovanna Senese and Jackie Wand} six defensemen {Jordan Anderson, Hannah Bielawski, Carolyn Fuwa, Kelly Micholson, Sam Ratty and Madeline Tank} and two goalies {Kelsey Ingram and Stephanie Lemke}. They are led by Coaches Emily Pemrick and Erich Klemm.
I have no doubt there will be much to write about in the months to come. For now, here’s to a stellar performance in Oswego!!!

U18 Boys 2007 Tournament Highlights
U18 Boys Hockey News
Little Caesars Tournament (9.7.07-9.9.07)
Game 1: Ohio Blue Jackets
A penalty filled 1st period kept both squads on specialty teams. First period was also marked with hard skating by both teams and the period ended with a 1-0 TI lead. The second period was marked with a number of missed net opportunities but TI continued its hard skating and the 2nd period score stayed 1-0. TI came out very soft in the 3rd and allowed a quick tying goal by Ohio. The final 5 minutes of the period was owned by TI and there were a number of great scoring chances but the game ended in tie.
Game 2: Indiana Jr. Ice
TI Came out flying and dominated play offensively, keeping the puck in their offensive zone most of period. Two late period goals gives TI a 2-0 lead after 1 period. The second period was even and ended at 2-0. With 3 minutes gone into 3rd period, the players connected on a pretty give and go which resulted in a 1 timer for to take the lead to 3-0. A Power Play goal takes the lead to 4-0. A sloppy, penalty filled 3rd period allows Indiana to creep back in as they scored two quick goals. A late 5 on 3 power play goal by TI killed the rally and the game ended at 5-2.
Game 3: Little Caesars
In period 1 both teams were flying and had equal scoring opportunities. TI killed off a 2 min 5 on 3 to end the first period and keep the score at 0-0. The second period was hard hitting and penalty filled for TI. Half way thru the 3rd LC scored and TI couldn't rebound. The games ends at 1-0.
Game 4: Playoff game vs. Fury
TI got into the playoffs as a wild card and was matched against Fury who was 3-0 in round robin play. The score was 0-0 after 1 period, in a hard skating contest. A power play goal by TI starts the second period and they took a 1-0 lead late into the period when Fury scored to deadlock the game at 1-1 after 2 periods. Period 3 ends with the teams still deadlocked as does the first period of OT, a 4 on 4 contest. With only seconds remaining in the 3 on 3 second OT, TO scores to win the game and advance to the semi finals.
Game 5: Belle Tire semi finals
A neutral zone turn over results in a 1-0 lead for TI half way though first period. A BT power play goal in the middle of second, ties the game at one a piece. A 2 on 1 gives BT the lead as the second period ends 2-1. A Late period goal off face if gives bt a 3-1 win
Mission-10.13.07
This game was marred with a number of penalties on both sides. A scrappy front of the net rebound goal in the first gives TI a lead they never relinquished. Play in the second period settled down a bit and there was no scoring so after 2 periods, the score remained 1-0 TI. Both teams came out flying in the third and the level of play was sloppy. Late in the third, with Mission's goalie out of the next, TI scored an empty net goal to seal the victory, 2-0.
Beantown Classic Tournament (10.18.07-10.21.07)
Game 1: LA Selects
An early first period turn over in the TI end leads to a 1-0 LA lead. TI out skated LA in first with multiple scoring chances, but couldn’t convert any of them into goals. Both teams scored a play goal midway through the first half and then late in the first half, LA scored again off of a TI defensive lapse in front of net. The contest ended 4-2 as each team pick up a hard working goal in the second half.
Game 2: Honeybaked
The game at UNH's facility was played on an Olympic sized rink which opened up the flow but neither team took advantage of the space. Both teams had multiple power play opportunities but didn’t convert, even on the 5 on 3's. A deflected shot from point scores first goal for TI with 5 minutes left to go in the first half and it ends with TI up 1-0 and dominating HB in the offensive end. HB comes out strong right away in the second half and ties the game with a quick goal. Honeybaked totally out hustled TI in second half, winning most battles. Strong goal tending kept TI in game. TI has a number of great scoring opportunities shorthanded, a 2 on 0 and a 2 on 1. A late second half goals on a 5 on 3 power play with less than two minutes to go gives Honeybaked the win, 2-1.
Game 3: Texas Attack
From the start of the game TI was in control. A goal from the point at 10 minute mark put TI up to stay as the team poured in on to Texas in the second half and ended up a 5-0 winner. This was one of the most complete games in the young season for the team as they made very few mistakes and played team hockey for the entire contest. Texas was not able to mount any sustained offense and TI continued to press and attack which kept Texas on its heels most of the game.
Game 4: Consolation game-LA Jr. Kings
A very sloppy first period by TI put then down 1-0 after the first half. TI had to kill a number of power plays to keep it at 1-0. A defensive zone breakdown by TI allows LA to take a 2-0 lead in the second half. Strong goal tending kept TI in game as LA had multiple breakaways that were stopped. With TI's goalie pulled late in the game, they score with a shot from the point to bring the game closer, but it ends at 2-1.
