10/22/12 - The 2002s traveled to Detroit to play in the Warrior Tournament this past weekend. TI had their hands full drawing 4 quality teams from Ontario.
In game #1 - Adrian Franco roofed a breakaway to give his team a 1-0 lead in the 1st over the Windsor Jr. Spitfire. Max Dukovac scored off a nice feed from Jake Proszenyak midway through the 2nd for a 2-1 lead and the defense, led by Marty Marnauzs and Tyler Ryan and solid goaltending from Shane Soderwall, made it hold up for a 2-1 win. Unfortunately, Team Illinois came out flat in game #2 against the #5 ranked Mississauga Reps and fell hard in a 9-2 loss. Rebounding in Game #3 against the #6 ranked York Simcoe Express, Mack Oliphant provided an early 1-0 lead, but YSE rallied to take a 2-1 lead at the end of the 2nd period. With five minutes to go, Max Dukovac slid one to Joe McKenna on a 2 on 1 and McKenna ripped it to tie the game. But, with less than a minute to go, YSE scored for a 3-2 final. The 02's drew the London Jr. Knights in their final game.Jake Proszenyak and Isaiah Gagerman led their defense and Kyle Wells was sharp in net holding the Knights to only 2 goals. Zach Bader & AJ Cornelison set up Mack Oliphant for their first goal and Brad Crook scored a late goal with a pass from Max Dukovac, to earn a hard fought 2-2 tie. Definitely a good showing for the boys against quality Canadian talent that prepares them for big games with the Chicago Mission and Livonia Knights this coming weekend! Warrior Weekend
11/10/12 - The 2002s had a good run at the Bauer Tourney last weekend. We started the weekend off with games against the North Jersey Avalanche and the 14th ranked Bay State Breakers. The boys came out strong scoring 13 goals in the 2 fairly easy wins. Kyle Wells was solid in net in game 1 against Jersey, while Jake Proszenyak and Isaiah Gagerman patrolled the Blue Line. The goal scoring was fairly balanced with 6 different players lighting the lamp, including Danny McCarthy, Adrian Franco and AJ Cornelison.
In game 2, Shane Soderwall earned the shutout in net with help from defensemen Marty Marnuazs and Hank Kempf. The defense also helped in the scoring as Tyler Ryan scored on a rocket wrist shot off a beautiful feed from Zach Bader. Max Dukovac certainly helped the cause with a hat trick. We were fortunate to get the opportunity to play a team from Slovakia on Saturday. After a slow start, our boys exploded for 9 goals and a 9-3 win. Jack Kazmierczak and Brad Crook led the offense, while Mack Oliphant contributed 2 goals & 2 assists. TI drew the late night Saturday game 8:30 pm start in Romeoville against the Milwaukee Jr. Admirals. Following another sluggish start & falling behind 3-2, our boys rallied for 5 straight goals. Brad Crook got us on the board early, while Jack Kazmierczak added a goal and Joe McKenna scored twice and added an assist during the run and a 7-3 victory. Our 4-0 record in the Round Robin earned us a Sunday Quarterfinal match up with the Fury. Unfortunately, we were forced to play shorthanded as Zach Bader spent the night at the hospital after suffering a head / neck injury in the game the night before. We could have used Zach as we were only able to produce 1 goal in a 2-1 loss to the Fury. Fortunately, we should be full strength when we get a rematch with them in 2 weeks in Orland Park.
01/02/2013 - A big win for TI's 2002s as they beat the #2 ranked Mission on Saturday, December 22nd. After a scoreless first period, Hank Kempf was able to beat the clock with a rocket wrist shot from the top of the circle for a Power Play goal with only .9 seconds left in the 2nd period. Hank was set up on D to D pass from his partner Tyler Ryan. TI capitalized on another Mission penalty to start the 3rd period as Max Dukovac set up Kempf for his 2nd goal of the game and a 2-0 lead. After the Mission scored to pull within a goal, Brad Crook stole a Mission pass and drove through 2 defensemen and slid a backhander through the Mission goalie's 5-hole for a 3-1 lead with 8 minutes to go.
TI was able to stretch the lead to 4-1 two minutes later when Jake Proszenyak hit Dukovac on a beautiful stretch pass splitting the D for a breakaway. With the net minder sitting in the goal, Max fired a wrister high glove side to the back of the net. With 2 minutes left, Dukovac iced the game with an empty netter securing the 5-2 Final! Kyle Wells was outstanding in net with 16 saves while Isaiah Gagerman and Marty Marnauzs led the D and limited the Mission's opportunities. The 2002s are now on their way to the Border Battle in Ann Arbor where they'll face several Top 30 teams including: Belle Tire, Allen Park, Victory Honda and a shot at #1 ranked St. Louis Jr. Blues.

01/13/2013 - The 2002s traveled to Ann Arbor the weekend of Jan. 5th to participate in the Top 10 Border Battle. The team got off to a slow start losing our first 2 games to the Allen Park Huskies and Victory Honda. However. they rallied from there for 3 straight wins, including a big victory over the #1 ranked St. Louis Jr. Blues. The game against St. Louis was tense, hard fought and dominated by the defenses and goal tending . After nearly two scoreless periods, Brad Crook won a battle in the corner and fed Danny McCarthy in the slot who buried the shot to finally give TI a 1-0 lead. Midway through the 3rd, TI was hit with 4 straight penalties that led to an extended 5 on 3 penalty kill. With great efforts & shot blocks from our D - Jake Proszenyak, Marty Marnauzs, Isaiah Gagerman, and Tyler Ryan we were able to kill nearly 4 minutes of 5 on 3, but with .24 left to kill and only 3 minutes left in the game, St. Louis scored to tie it. Although the team was extremely tired following the kill, we brought new energy in the next minute and Max Dukovac was able launch a wrister that beat the Blues keeper stick side high and reclaim our 1 goal lead. St. Louis came at us hard in the final 2 minutes, but as he had done all day, Shane Soderwall stood tall in net to preserve the 2-1 victory!
This past Saturday, TI hosted the #5 ranked Fury. We dominated the first few minutes, just missing several point black opportunities, but found ourselves behind 1-0. With less than a minute to go in the 1st, Max Dukovac found Tyler Ryan darting in from the Blue Line & Ryan ripped a wrist shot over the goalie to tie things up at 1 following a period in which we out shoot the Fury 14-3. Things evened up in the 2nd period with both teams finding the back of the net. Zach Bader set up Mack Oliphant for a backhander that gave us a 2-1 lead. And minutes later, Bader gave another beautiful feed to Brad Crook who buried his opportunity to give us another 1 goal lead. After the Fury had scored again to tie the game at 3, Max Dukovac lit the lamp with only .17 seconds left in the 2nd to give us a 4-3 lead. Hank Kempf led the defensive effort in the 3rd period while Shane Soderwall kept the puck out of the net and earned the 4-3 victory. This page last modified on Monday, January 28, 2013 |
